iThere is something i have been thinking about lately. I think alot and i am cool with it 🙂 As a christian i try no matter how hard it is to look/be like Jesus Christ (btw that’s where the word “Christian” comes from –> being like Christ) and when i read the bible i see things that amaze me and things that challenge me.
So much for the introduction, today i am writing about a particular sin and how to walk away from it ! Hahaha that’s at least what i will try to do. It is a common sin we all once did and as stated in the title LIES are the subjet of my writings today. I believe Lies are one of the most common and subtle sins. We tell lies about everything and even consider it to be without consequences. But hey every sin has a consequence immediate or not.
"No lies about your neighbor" Exodus 20:16 MSG
"Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour"
Exodus 20:16 KJV
you can also check NIV (New International Version), they say it clear do not lie to your neighbor. A religion Scholar asked Jesus who his neighbor was and he answered with Luke 10:30-37. To sum it up, your neighbor is every one else, your Teacher, Professor, classmate, the cashier at your favorite Store and you should treat them kindly.
You must not steal. You must not lie or deceive one another.
Some reasons why we tell lies
- to avoid punishment
- as an act of aggression: “This is when you deliberately lie to harm someone else,”
- to obtain a sense of power: “If you can lie and get away with it, you feel more powerful and you feel superior, and the more you lie and get away with it, the more powerful you feel,”
- to assist self-deception: These are lies we tell to others to avoid confronting some painful truth about ourselves
- to manipulate the behavior of others: “People lie and distort the truth to pursue their own needs and wishes and, at times, the needs of others,”
- to help another person: i.e a sibling
- to maintain self-esteem:
- to create a sense of identity: Telling lies to have people see you in a certain way,”
Why you shouldn’t tell lies?
If you look in the bible you will find enough allusions to lie as a sin and why it is not good. When i was a teenager, i loved to build up stories to fit my ways/ purpose. I got so good at it my Aunt once told me she couldn’t say when i was telling the truth. My lies were better than my thruths, they looked more realistic. Thank God i met Jesus and the first oath i took was not to lie anymore (i think it was more for myself like if i follow Jesus there has to be a change in my way of doing), it was difficult but it is not anymore. Do not go out there thinking lie is a lowkey sin (even apart from being a sin,it is of no good, think about how you felt when you discover someone has been lying to you). There’s nothing such as worst sin unless you sin against the holy spirit (Mark 3:29). The consequence of talking in someone’s back can be as desastrous as murdering that someone. Thing is, it does not have an immediate consequence so beware. You may get caught up in a web of lies and find it difficult to trust people (trust issues), or yourself. Another reason maybe this:
"Here are six things God hates,
and one more that he loathes with a passion:
eyes that are arrogant,
a tongue that lies,
hands that murder the innocent,
a heart that hatches evil plots,
feet that race down a wicked track,
a mouth that lies under oath,
a troublemaker in the family. "
Proverbs 6:16 MSG
How to get away from telling lies
Honestly? i don’t know, for me it was a decision and i sticked to it. However during my reading ativities i learned you have o first thing first admit you have a problem (?) Then find the reasons why you tell lies and from there set goals. Why do you want to stop lying? Furthermore i learned as a christian that knowing your identity and why on earth you are here for helps you stay focused and achieve your goals. My identity is found in Christ and through him i can do all things (Phillipians 4:13). Jesus was found with no sin and as i look up at him and have faith he will sustain me, it is easier for me to choose truth knowing : “Souls are saved by truthful witness and betrayed by the spread of lies” Proverbs 14:25
Well there’s more to lies but this is my humble contribution, I hope you liked it, leave me a comment 🙂 i would be pleased to read your thoughts!
